Obverse description Black intaglio-style engraving on white paper, with the issuer title 'CHATHAM ISLANDS / NEW ZEALAND' across the upper portion and the motto 'FIRST TO SEE THE SUN' along the lower border. A central vignette presents a colour illustration of a Chatham albatross head in three-quarter profile to the left of centre, flanked on the right by an oval medallion with a finely engraved close-up portrait of a black robin, both birds endemic to the Chatham Islands; corner cartouches carry the year '2001' within guilloche rosettes. To the left, a circular holographic foil seal is affixed, and a red alphanumeric serial number appears above the denomination legend 'EIGHT DOLLARS / EIGHT HUNDRED CENTS' set within an elaborate pink guilloche underprint rosette at centre.
