The Kermode bear — a rare white-coated black bear found almost exclusively along British Columbia's central and north coast — carries deep significance in Gitxsan and other First Nations traditions, where it is known as moksgm'ol. The unusual colouration results from a double recessive gene, not albinism, and roughly one in ten bears in the region expresses it. The $8 denomination itself is a Royal Canadian Mint convention used since 2006 for its fine silver wildlife series, chosen partly to align with the cultural significance of the number eight in Chinese-Canadian communities — a deliberate commercial calculation for the collector gift market.
