Obverse description The obverse bears the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Susanna Blunt, depicting a bare-headed right-facing portrait of the Queen at approximately 77 years of age, wearing a necklace and drop earrings. The legend around the upper periphery reads ELIZABETH II D·G·REGINA, with the denomination 8 DOLLARS inscribed below. The effigy is rendered in fine relief against a smooth field, in the refined portrait style adopted by the Royal Canadian Mint from 2003 onward.

Additional information

The Grizzly Bear belongs to Canada's "Predator Series," a bullion program the Royal Canadian Mint launched to compete directly with fractional silver products from Perth and the U.S. Mint. The 1.5 oz format is deliberately awkward — it fits no standard bullion denomination and was designed primarily to anchor a retail price point rather than a stackable weight, a strategy the RCM deployed aggressively across several series during this period.
