Australia's silver Koala bullion series, managed by the Perth Mint, updates its reverse design annually — a deliberate strategy introduced partly to suppress secondary-market melting and encourage collector retention. The $8 denomination places this coin in the mid-tier of the Koala weight range, corresponding to the five-troy-ounce specification that the Mint introduced to compete directly with comparable issues from the Royal Canadian Mint.
Elizabeth II's fourth portrait, by Ian Rank-Broadley, was in use from 1998 until it was retired in favour of Jody Clark's effigy in 2019 for most Commonwealth issuers — making 2017 one of the final years this obverse appeared on Perth Mint bullion.
