The wedge-tailed eagle has appeared on Australian bullion coinage since 1992, but ultra high relief strikes of this scale require individual hand-finishing of each die — a process Perth has refined over decades of producing some of the technically demanding proof issues in the southern hemisphere. At 155.5 grams, the planchet depth required to accommodate the relief presents genuine striking challenges that flat-bed production simply cannot solve.
Charles III's first portrait on Australian coinage, sculpted by Martin Jennings, was adopted following the King's accession in September 2022.
