The late Genoese Republic was, by the 1760s, a diminished power — stripped of Corsica by transfer to France in 1768 after the republic could no longer afford to suppress the island's independence movement. These small billon pieces circulated through that contraction, serving a local economy that had long since ceded its banking and mercantile dominance to other centers.
