Mongolia issued this coin in 1976 as part of a broader conservation-themed series, at a moment when the wild Przewalski horse — native to the Mongolian steppes — had already been extinct in the wild for roughly two decades. The last confirmed wild sighting was in 1969 in the Dzungarian Gobi. By 1976, the species survived exclusively in captivity, primarily in European zoos, making the choice of subject pointed rather than celebratory.
KM#38 was struck for international collector markets; virtually no examples entered domestic circulation in Mongolia itself.
