| Additional information |
Marie-Galante, the largest of Guadeloupe's outer islands at roughly 158 square kilometers, was among the first Caribbean territories claimed by France — Columbus named it in 1493 after his flagship, the Santa María la Galante. It remained almost exclusively a sugar economy well into the twentieth century, with more windmills per square kilometer at its peak than nearly anywhere in the Atlantic world.
Guadeloupe issues coins under a French territorial arrangement but holds no independent monetary authority; these pieces circulate as collectibles rather than legal tender in any practical sense.
