Issued in 1995 while the Bosnian War was still being fought, this coin was produced for an export collector market that the country's own citizens had virtually no access to. The National Bank was operating under wartime conditions, and commemorative programs like this one were partly a mechanism for generating hard currency reserves through foreign numismatic sales — a strategy common among newly independent states with blocked trade channels.
The hedgehog series tapped into a broader European wildlife commemorative trend of the early 1990s. KM#43 is a low-mintage issue; the Dayton Agreement ending the war was signed in November of that same year.
