Freienohl is a small village in the Sauerland district of Westphalia, and its Gemeindekasse — the municipal treasury — issued this 75 Pfennig note as part of the broader Notgeld emergency currency wave that swept Germany between 1917 and 1921. Local authorities at every level, from major cities down to villages of a few hundred residents, were forced into paper issuance when small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation, hoarded or melted as metal values rose.
The 75 Pfennig denomination is among the less common values in Westphalian municipal Notgeld — 25, 50, and 1 Mark denominations dominated most series.
