Hamelin's 1921 notgeld series is among the more deliberately theatrical of the German emergency currency issues — the city leaned hard into its Rattenfänger legend, commissioning Appelhans Verlag in Braunschweig to produce a set clearly intended as much for the collector trade as for actual small-change use. By 1921, the notgeld souvenir market was already well understood by municipal issuers, and Hamelin had the advantage of an internationally recognizable story to sell.

The watermarked paper is worth noting — most notgeld of this period dispensed with such formalities entirely.
