Büsum's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the second wave of German municipal emergency currency, printed after the initial postwar coin shortage had already peaked — by 1921, many towns were issuing Notgeld less out of necessity than as a deliberate revenue scheme, selling attractive sets to collectors at face value and pocketing the difference when notes were never redeemed. W. Clausen was a local Büsum printer, not a specialist currency house, which was entirely typical of smaller North Sea coastal municipalities that lacked connections to the major Leipzig or Hamburg printers.
