Weida's 1921 Notgeld issue belongs to the peak years of German municipal emergency currency, when hundreds of small Thuringian towns were printing their own denominations to address the chronic coin shortage that plagued the early Weimar economy. The Stadt Weida series was handled by Johannes Arndt's press in Jena, a regional printer that took on considerable Notgeld work during this period rather than the Leipzig or Berlin houses that dominated larger contracts.
Weida itself is a small town in the Greiz district, notable mainly for the Osterburg castle above the Weida river. Whether that local identity found its way into the design is catalogued elsewhere — what matters here is that these notes were genuinely used, not purely collected, and circulation wear is common.
