Begur is a small hilltop town in the Costa Brava interior, and the Cooperativa Bagurense was one of thousands of local consumer cooperatives and municipal bodies across Republican-held Catalonia that issued emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — particularly after the summer of 1936, when the collapse of normal commercial activity and a severe shortage of small change made local scrip a practical necessity rather than a political statement. These issues are catalogued under the broader *billetes locales* phenomenon and are generally scarce simply because most were redeemed, destroyed, or lost in the chaos of the Nationalist advance into Catalonia in early 1939.
The 75 pesetas denomination is unusually large for a cooperative issue of this type, where centimos and single-peseta values were far more common.
