Austrian notgeld from the chaotic post-WWI period, when municipal and rural communities throughout the former empire issued their own emergency small-denomination paper because metal coinage had effectively vanished from circulation. Steinkreuz is a small community in Upper Austria — the kind of issuer where a single alderman's signature sufficed, here that of Johann Riepl, whose role was almost certainly that of a local mayor or council head rather than any banking officer.

Rural Upper Austrian notgeld at this denomination was produced in tiny quantities and often redeemed quickly within the issuing community itself, which makes survival rates genuinely uneven.
