Kössen is a small parish in the Tyrolean district of Kufstein, and its 1919 Heller notes belong to the enormous wave of Austrian Notgeld issued after the collapse of the Habsburg economy left small communities without enough coin for day-to-day commerce. Thousands of municipalities printed their own emergency scrip during this period — the challenge for collectors is that quality and survival rates vary enormously between issues.
Wagner of Innsbruck was a competent regional printer responsible for a number of Tyrolean municipal issues, which gives this note a degree of production consistency not always found in the smallest village issues printed on whatever press was available.
