Austrian Notgeld of the early 1920s was a direct consequence of the catastrophic coin shortage that followed the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy. Municipalities across Upper Austria — Hartkirchen among them — were authorized to issue their own small-denomination emergency notes to keep local commerce moving. The 75 Heller denomination is slightly unusual within the Hartkirchen series; most villages anchored their issues at rounder values.
Signed by M. Hofer and Dr. Laimer, likely the Bürgermeister and a municipal official respectively, though their precise roles are unconfirmed by surviving records.
