Gries am Brenner sits at the foot of the Brenner Pass, which by 1920 had just become a hard political border — the 1919 Treaty of Saint-Germain assigned the former Austrian South Tyrol to Italy, and the Brenner itself became the frontier. The municipality's decision to issue Notgeld that year wasn't incidental to that upheaval; the post-war coin shortage that drove emergency scrip across Austria hit mountain communities with particularly little liquidity and no buffer.
The Jaksch catalog distinguishes multiple varieties within this denomination, so the specific sub-type matters to attribution.
