Wickendorf is a small village in Upper Austria, and like hundreds of similarly sized Austrian communes, it was forced into issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — during the acute coin shortage that gripped Austria from around 1919 onward. The federal government simply could not produce enough small-denomination coinage to meet everyday demand, so municipalities, businesses, and even individual farms stepped in. Ortsvorsteher Karl Zehetner's signature here is the entire administrative apparatus behind this note; there was no bank, no treasury committee.
The Jaksc catalogue remains the primary reference for Austrian local Notgeld, documenting issues that Pick treats only superficially.
