One of thousands of Austrian Notgeld issues produced during the severe coin shortage that followed the First World War, this 75 Heller note was issued by the Catholic Press Association of Linz — an ecclesiastical publishing body pressed into an unlikely role as a local emergency currency issuer. The printer, the Akademischer Preßvereins-Buchdruckerei, was the association's own in-house press, making this an unusually self-contained operation: the institution that needed the money simply printed it themselves.
The Heller denomination itself was effectively obsolete by the time most Austrian Notgeld circulated, the coin having disappeared almost entirely from 1918 onward.
