| Additional information |
Greg Louganis won both the springboard and platform diving golds at the 1988 Seoul Olympics — but what defined those Games for him was the preliminary round incident in which he struck his head on the springboard during a reverse pike, required stitches, and returned within the hour to complete his dive and ultimately win. He had also been diagnosed with HIV earlier that year, a fact not publicly disclosed until 1995, which recast the entire episode in retrospect. The Marshall Islands was among the most prolific issuers of large-format commemorative silver in the late 1980s, targeting the collector market rather than circulation.
