Greenbrier County issued this note in 1862 while Virginia was already at war and the broader monetary system was fracturing rapidly. Local governments across the Confederacy resorted to fractional scrip precisely because small-denomination coinage had vanished from circulation almost entirely — hoarded by a public that no longer trusted paper. The County of Greenbrier was hardly alone in this, but its notes are among the more geographically specific survivals from what is now West Virginia, which separated from Virginia in 1863.
Lewisburg itself changed hands several times during the war. Notes issued here in 1862 would have circulated in genuinely unstable conditions, and few were preserved with any care.
