The Vasco da Gama Aquarium in Lisbon opened in 1898, constructed specifically for the World Exhibition that year celebrating the 400th anniversary of da Gama's sea route to India. It is one of the oldest public aquariums in the world still in operation, and that continuity — over a century of uninterrupted use — is precisely what makes it a plausible subject for a commemorative issue from the Casa da Moeda.
The 7½ euro denomination belongs to Portugal's ongoing numismatic program pairing unconventional face values with cultural heritage themes, a format introduced in 2021.
