Reverse description A bold, stylized bearded effigy of the explorer Fernão de Magalhães (Ferdinand Magellan) occupies the central field in high relief, rendered in a geometric, modernist style. A small caravel under sail is depicted to the lower left behind the portrait. The legend 'FERNÃO • DE • MAGALHÃES' arcs along the upper periphery. The inscription 'PARTIDA 1519' appears vertically along the right rim, and the mint and engraver credits 'INCM – L. F. ABREU' are inscribed in small lettering at the lower left.

Additional information

Issued as part of Portugal's extended commemorative program marking the quincentenary of Magellan's 1519 departure from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, this gold piece belongs to a multi-year, multi-metal series that INCM stretched across the full five-year span of the original voyage. The fractional denomination — 7½ euros — deliberately echoes the old half-escudo unit, a numismatic nod to the currency Magellan's fleet actually carried.

Magellan himself never completed the circumnavigation; he was killed in the Philippines in April 1521. It was Juan Sebastián Elcano who brought the Victoria home with 18 surviving crew from an original complement of roughly 270.
