Joaquim Agostinho remains one of the most celebrated cyclists in Portuguese history, finishing third overall at the Tour de France in both 1978 and 1979 — results that have never been matched by a Portuguese rider. He died in 1984 from injuries sustained in a crash during the Volta a Portugal, still racing at 41.
