Obverse description The obverse presents the four-character reign title legend 嗣德通寶 arranged in cruciform fashion around a central square hole, reading top-bottom-right-left in the traditional Vietnamese-Chinese numismatic convention. The characters are rendered in bold, deeply incused relief within a plain, unadorned field. A raised circular rim frames the entire design, consistent with the large-format silver cash coinage of the Nguyễn dynasty. The calligraphic style is formal and authoritative, reflecting the imperial workshop standards of Emperor Tự Đức's reign.

Reverse description The reverse features two highly stylized imperial dragons rendered in sinuous, flowing relief, flanking the central square hole on either side. The dragons are depicted ascending symmetrically, their scaled bodies writhing with elaborately detailed claws, fins, and tails. Above the square hole, between the dragons' heads, a flaming pearl or lotus motif is depicted, while below the hole an auspicious cloud or wave scroll element fills the lower field. The entire composition is enclosed within a raised circular border, the dynamic duality of the dragon motif symbolizing imperial power and celestial authority in the Nguyễn court tradition.
