Reverse description Two sinuous, finely detailed dragons depicted in facing postures flanking the central square hole, their scaled bodies curving dynamically around the perforation. Above the hole, a flaming pearl or sun motif is rendered in high relief with flame-like protrusions and a cloud or wave element. Below the hole, a stylized floral or cloud scroll ornament fills the lower field. The dragons display clawed feet, elaborate crests, and intricately textured scales, executed in the refined Vietnamese court aesthetic of the Nguyễn dynasty. A reeded or striated outer rim encircles the entire composition.

Additional information

Tự Đức reigned during one of the most pressured periods in Vietnamese history, with French military intervention escalating from the 1858 bombardment of Đà Nẵng through the eventual protectorate treaties of 1883 — the final year of this coin's production run. Gold coinage of this denomination functioned largely as court currency and state gift rather than traded money, keeping surviving examples in conditions reflecting minimal handling.

The 7 tiền weight standard is specific to the Nguyễn monetary hierarchy, sitting between the lạng and smaller fractional issues. KM#551 is among the more substantial gold pieces of the series by mass.
