Issued as part of Turkey's ongoing commemorative bullion program, this piece marks the 1999 archaeological season at Hisarlık — the site identified by Heinrich Schliemann in the 1870s as ancient Troy. The denomination itself reflects the chronic inflation that had plagued the Turkish lira since the early 1980s, necessitating face values in the millions for even the smallest gold coins. By 1999, the lira had depreciated so severely that this coin's nominal face value represented a trivial fraction of its melt worth.
Turkey formally redenominated its currency in 2005, replacing one million old lira with a single New Turkish Lira.
