Part of Turkey's long-running native flora silver series, this issue commemorates Iris pamphylica, a species endemic to the Antalya province on the southern Anatolian coast and classified as vulnerable due to its extremely restricted range. The series itself was produced by the Darphane during a period of acute monetary instability — the 2001 banking crisis had sent inflation spiraling and wiped out a significant portion of household savings, making collector issues like this one curiosities of a mint trying to generate hard-currency revenue while the lira collapsed around it.
Turkey redenominated in 2005, erasing six zeros from the currency. Any piece denominated in the old millions now reads as an artifact of that inflationary episode.
