When France locked its conversion rate to the euro on January 1, 1999, one euro was fixed at exactly 6.55957 francs — making this coin a deliberate artifact of that irrevocable peg, its face value a frozen exchange rate struck into metal. Monnaie de Paris issued several pieces in this denomination precisely to mark the franc's final years before euro coins entered circulation in 2002.
The "Modern Art" series drew from the Centre Pompidou's collection. This particular piece was part of a broader commemorative program that leaned heavily on cultural prestige as the franc prepared to exit 1,300 years of French monetary history.
