Brazil's independence from Portugal was declared on September 7, 1822, and the Casa da Moeda moved quickly to produce pattern strikes establishing the new empire's coinage identity. This copper piece at 6400 réis was an exploratory denomination — the 6400 réis existed as a gold coin under colonial Portuguese administration, and transposing it to copper for an independent Brazil was almost certainly a value exercise rather than a genuine production proposal. It never entered circulation.
