Obverse description Draped bust of Queen Maria I facing right, her hair elaborately dressed and adorned with a distinctive lace headdress veil, pearl necklace, and ornate ribbons, rendered in fine baroque style. The truncation of the bust is visible at the lower field, with the date and mint mark (e.g. 1793·R·) inscribed in the exergue below. The circular Latin legend reads MARIA·I·D·G·PORT·ET·ALG·REGINA, distributed around the periphery. The portrait is executed with high relief and exceptional detail, characteristic of late 18th-century Portuguese colonial coinage. A toothed border frames the entire design.

Reverse description The elaborate royal arms of Maria I displayed on an ornate baroque cartouche occupying the full field. The shield, bearing the traditional Portuguese quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) and the castle bordure of Castile, is surmounted by a royal crown with cross finial. The achievement is flanked by richly detailed acanthus and foliate scrollwork mantling extending to the periphery, with a decorative shell motif at the base. The composition is entirely without legend, relying solely on the heraldic design, and is executed in high relief consistent with the quality of the obverse. A toothed border frames the reverse.
