| Reverse description | Central oval cartouche bearing the Portuguese royal arms: the quinas (five escutcheons arranged in a cross, each charged with five bezants) enclosed within an oval border, surrounded by seven castles representing the Kingdom of the Algarve. The oval shield is set upon an elaborately tooled hatched field and framed by a richly detailed Baroque mantling of acanthus scrollwork, floral garlands, and foliage. The entire composition is surmounted by the Portuguese royal crown. The legend IN HOC SIGNO VINCES (In this sign thou shalt conquer) arcs along the upper periphery, and the denomination 6400 REIS is inscribed at the lower field. |
