Obverse description Central field occupied by the crowned Portuguese royal shield, featuring the five escutcheons charged with five bezants in saltire and bordered by the castles of the quinas, surmounted by a narrow crown with a cross at its apex. The denomination 640 appears to the left of the shield, flanked by three rosettes or floral ornaments. The date is inscribed to the left of the crown. The circular legend reads PETRVS·II·D·G·PORT·REX·ET·BRAS·D·, separated by pellets, within a beaded inner border.
