Obverse description The crowned Portuguese royal arms occupy the centre of the coin, displaying the five escutcheons charged with bezants (quinas) arranged in a cross, surrounded by a bordure of seven castles, all surmounted by a large royal crown. The denomination numeral 640 appears to the left of the shield, flanked by three rosettes to the right, while the date is positioned in the field beside the crown. The circular legend runs around the periphery, separated from the design by a plain inner border, with a beaded outer border along the rim.
