Obverse description Central device features the crowned Portuguese royal arms, a quartered shield displaying the traditional escutcheons of Portugal and the diagonal band of the Kingdom of the Algarves, surmounted by a royal crown with elaborate floral and architectural detailing. The date appears divided on either side of the crown, and the denomination 640 is inscribed to the left of the shield within the field. The circular legend reading JOANNES·D·G·PORT·ET·ALG·P·REGENS surrounds the central device, interrupted by dot separators, with the denomination numeral flanking the shield. The coin's broad milled border frames the design with a fine toothed rim.
