Issued to mark Bhumibol Adulyadej's 60th year on the throne — the longest reign of any monarch in Thai history at that point, and celebrated in June 2006 with a globally attended jubilee ceremony in Bangkok. The 600-baht denomination was set deliberately to echo the anniversary figure, a common Thai royal commemorative practice rather than any functional currency consideration. Bhumibol had ascended in 1946 under circumstances that remain officially unresolved; his cousin Ananda Mahidol died of a gunshot wound days before the succession.
