Neumarkt an der Ybbs was one of hundreds of Austrian market towns that issued their own small-denomination emergency paper — Notgeld — after the First World War, when coin metal had been absorbed by the war economy and official small change had all but vanished from circulation. The 60 Heller value places this note in the mid-range of such issues, which typically ran from 10 to 80 Heller.
By 1920 the Heller itself was being swallowed by the hyperinflation that would ultimately destroy the Austrian crown, making notes like this one obsolete within a few years of printing.
