Bad Gastein was already a well-established spa resort by 1920, but the postwar economic collapse had drained even prosperous Austrian communities of small change. This 60 Heller note is a Notgeld issue — emergency municipal scrip printed to compensate for the near-total disappearance of coin from circulation following the First World War. The denomination itself is characteristic of the Austrian provincial Notgeld wave of 1919–1921, which produced an extraordinary range of fractional values that no central authority would have bothered to issue.
Rolanddruck was a Salzburg-based printer responsible for several regional Notgeld series, keeping production local at a time when freight costs and supply disruptions made distant printing houses impractical.
