Reverse description A bold cross of the Order of Christ occupies the center of the reverse, with four quadrants each containing a small cinquefoil rosette. The circular legend reads .*.IN.HOC.SIGNO.VINCES, the Constantinian motto meaning 'In this sign you shall conquer,' arranged around the cross. The coin appears to be die-rotated such that the legend reads from the bottom, consistent with the coin alignment noted. A beaded or rope-patterned border frames the entire reverse design. The strong, deeply struck cross and the elegant spacing of the rosettes are characteristic of the milled coinage produced at the Lisbon Mint under Pedro II.
