Reverse description St. Rupert, patron saint of Salzburg, is depicted enthroned in full face, vested in episcopal robes and holding the crozier in his right hand. He is flanked on either side by a standing lion passant, serving as heraldic supporters. A Latin circular legend naming the saint frames the composition.

Additional information

Struck to commemorate the end of a plague outbreak that had ravaged Salzburg, this multiple thaler was issued under Archbishop Johann Jakob Khuen von Belasi, who held the see from 1560 until his death in 1586. Six-thaler pieces of this type were never meant for commerce — their weight alone precluded it. They were presentation objects, struck in limited numbers for diplomatic gifts and the archives of powerful recipients.

The Zöttl 588 variety distinction matters here: minor die differences within this series are well-documented, and misattribution between variants is common in the trade.
