Ramon Despuig served as Grand Master from 1736 until his death in 1741, one of the shorter tenures of the 18th century. The tari was the Order's principal silver denomination, its value fixed to the Sicilian monetary system from which the unit was borrowed — "tari" itself derives from the Arabic tarī, carried into Mediterranean coinage through Norman Sicily centuries before the Hospitallers struck a single coin.
Despuig's issues are sometimes found with weak areas around the cross due to die-filling problems common to the Valletta mint in this period.
