| Reverse description | A mounted knight in full armour rides to the right on a prancing horse, sword raised aloft, a depiction emblematic of the Dutch provincial rijder type from which the coin derives its popular name Rijderschelling. The equestrian figure is rendered in the bold, somewhat schematic style typical of hammered Dutch provincial coinage of the late seventeenth century. The circular Latin legend CONCORDIA . RES . PARVAE . CRESCVNT surrounds the central device, meaning 'By unity small things grow.' The flan is irregular and slightly uneven, consistent with hammered production at the Groningen Mint. |
