Obverse description The Portuguese royal arms occupy the central field, featuring the quartered shield with castles and bezants, surmounted by a royal crown. The shield is rendered in a simple, bold style characteristic of hammered colonial coinage struck at the Goa mint during the reign of Queen Maria II. The coin bears a date on dated varieties (1845–1848), while the undated issue (circa 1840) omits the date entirely. The edge shows a milled or grained treatment. The overall design reflects the rudimentary die-cutting typical of Portuguese Indian provincial issues of this period.
