Obverse description Central device features a displayed imperial eagle, rendered in the style typical of German municipal coinage of the late 17th century. A mark or symbol (star or X depending on variety) appears above the eagle's head, initiating the surrounding legend. The legend TREMONIENSIS — the Latin toponym for Dortmund — encircles the design within a beaded or rope border. The fields are uneven, consistent with hammered production. The overall design reflects the civic heraldic tradition of the Free Imperial City of Dortmund.

Additional information

Dortmund held the status of a Free Imperial City of the Holy Roman Empire, a designation that granted it the right to strike its own coinage — a privilege it exercised jealously even as its actual political and economic influence was declining sharply through the seventeenth century. By the 1650s, the city was deeply indebted and shrinking in regional significance, yet continued issuing small silver denominations partly as a matter of civic identity. The thirty-year production window for this type suggests die reuse rather than consistent reminting.
