Traunstein's municipal administration issued small-denomination Pfennig notes as emergency currency — Notgeld — during the severe coin shortage that gripped Germany from around 1916 onward, when metal was systematically diverted to wartime production. A city magistrate issuing paper in denominations as low as 6 Pfennig reflects just how completely the fractional coinage supply had collapsed at the local level.
The official stamp served as the primary authentication against counterfeiting, a common solution among Bavarian municipal issuers who lacked access to sophisticated printing facilities. Traunstein's issues are scarce relative to larger Bavarian cities — the town's small population meant limited print runs.
