Obverse description Conjoined facing busts of Philip II of Spain and Mary I of England in profile, Philip to the left draped in armour with a ruffled collar and Mary to the right wearing a veil and royal robes, the two effigies facing one another in the centre of the field. A large royal crown surmounts both busts, with the date 54 (for 1554) divided on either side beneath the crown. The surrounding Latin legend reads PHILIP · ET · MARIA · D · G · R · ANG · FR · NEAP · PR · HISP, enclosed within an inner beaded border and an outer beaded rim characteristic of mid-Tudor hammered silver coinage.
