| Obverse description | Left-facing crowned effigy of King George VI, rendered in high relief with fine detail to the crown and facial features. The legend encircles the portrait, reading GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR, with the abbreviated PM appearing to the right. The truncation of the bust is cleanly defined, and the design was executed by Percy Metcalfe in a restrained, classical style consistent with British colonial coinage of the period. |

| Reverse description | Two crossed battle axes, their hafts forming a prominent saltire across the centre of the field, with the engraver's initials KG visible at the crossing point. The four-digit date is divided into two pairs by the axes, reading 19 and 44 (or relevant year) in the upper quarters, while the large numeral 6 occupies the lower centre and the word PENCE appears in the exergue below. The legend SOUTHERN RHODESIA curves around the upper periphery, and the whole design is contained within a beaded border. |
