François, Duke of Anjou and Alençon, was invited by the States General to serve as "Defender of Belgian Liberty" in 1581 — a title that papered over deep mutual suspicion. This coin was struck during his turbulent tenure, which collapsed spectacularly in January 1583 when his troops attempted to seize Antwerp and several other Flemish cities by force. The episode, known as the "French Fury," ended in a rout. François fled the Netherlands within months, and the copper coinage struck in his name became a short-lived curiosity of a failed political experiment.
