Obverse description The heraldic bear of St. Gallen, rampant and facing left, depicted with a studded collar and open jaws, occupies the central field. The bear stands on its hind legs in a vigorous, animated posture characteristic of Swiss cantonal coinage of the early 18th century. A circular inner border frames the central device, with the Latin legend MON·NOVA·S·GALLENSIS distributed around the periphery. A small decorative cartouche or mintmark device appears at the base of the design below the bear.
